Evaluation on the Cousework

Over the past year my skills in my Graphics coursework has improved in a massive scale on the software Photoshop, Illustrator having no skills or any knowledge I have learnt new things also different medias for experiments which I’ve never done before.

the logo design for the travel company, creating a number of sketches for it then finalizing on four an then developing some changes to them. At that stage they seemed good but looking back they could be a better outcome.

The composition collage in the style Michelle Thompson, researching into her work to see what she represents in her work is how she uses textures in her collage and news clippings that occur in the news and newspapers at the time. My collage is to resemble her work researching in newspapers for interesting topics and creating a collage that has something to do with it.  Looking back the collage could be  better outcome in quality.

The self-interaction of myself taking a photo was a success, I enjoyed this topic as greatened my photoshop skills and photography skills also. the design could be a poster on billboards and advertisements. I have the images of in different clothes and having them in different settings is quite amusing.

The two book covers were interesting the first with photos from the internet then primary photos with learning the photoshop brush I combined them both together. To have the book cover professional I wouldn’t have watercolour brush it looks basic and not a professional cover.  And the Resistors topic, creating images out of electronic parts my theme was music and the Artist was Carlos Aponte his work looks like cartoon with bright flamboyant colours as my book cover could be better to look like its in his style with a greater colour edge to the resistors.

The main section to the coursework was to design a zine for Dr Marten. Learning skills that I can use from the induction helped along the way. Researching about the famous boots brand the history of them, who wears them before and now how they are becoming a trend in fashion. Producing many primary photos of DMs from going into shops and of Friends and Family. looking into types of artist that collide with the theme Dr Martens wasn’t hard, I chose Barbara Kruger and Jamie Reid. They both have this edge that go well perfectly to the Dr Martens. Having many ideas and experiments the first Zine was repetitive, so I went and took more Primary photos this time on a different perspective and age for my Zine and then researching on another artist who also has rebel feel to his work, the artist is Guillaume Vasseur. Then the second Zine is doesn’t repeat and has three different artist the quality of the outcome is at the best I can do from my skills I’ve learnt over the year. The zine gives information on the boots and could be a book for advertisements and a single idea can be a poster as well.

Dr Marten Zine:

Final Zine towards the coursework for Dr Martens.

Dr Martens:
In style of Vasseur where I made a silhouette of a picture to the merged aged texture with red.  I wrote “Dr Martens”, rasterized the text inverted so it will cut outside the silhouette added a brush that looks like scratches.  Its in the style of Vasseur’s “American Psycho” It shows the sign of danger with the colour red and the image looks rebellious.

It’s Who You Are:
In the style of Vasseur in his “Kill Bill” poster I download a the blood font it looks dangerous and could show what happens when you get hit with the bat, you get blood!
The character kicking showing off the boot is a pose a lot of researched photos do using there shoes as a weapon. The quote “It’s who you are” doesn’t have a difficult meaning that the skinhead subcultures are Dr Martens.

Shattered Dreams:
Another idea with the smashed glass that the DM boot is smashing the glass and coming out of the page,
This could show other reasons why DMs can ruin lives as the boots are so bulky they can cause damage.

Shattered Dreams:
This idea was from Vasseur’s smashed glass idea I downloaded a glass brush and put it with an aged texture which looks similar to Vasseur’s.  The meaning to the quote “shattered dreams” that life wearing Dr Martens are that your dreams shatter Skinheads living a different life and being a rebel your going to have enemies.

Fill Your Boots:

This piece is in Guillaume Vasseur. In the style “The Night of the Dead” I combined an aged texture with black then pin light together to look gothic then instead of a white circle I have a brick wall then added a character wearing DMs swearing and messing around.

I will use this in my final Zine as I have nothing like this yet and it helps show another side to Dr Martens and the dashed yellow line resembles the yellow lace around the boot.

Guillaume Vasseur:

Born in 1985 in Calais, he studied fine arts and digital design to UVHC (Valenciennes) to incorporate a Professional Master.

Oriented interactive media, Vasseur allowed to utilize his skills and knowledge of art in the service of a numerical approach to graphic design.

He was able to address the graphics in different angles and develop certain skills in illustration, animation and more interactive.

Vasseur appreciates the simple shapes and composition is clear, consistent and effective, and likes to balance his work between graphic design and illustration.

He’s had the opportunity to create different content graphs for iPhone and iPad within society Byook, first during a 6 month internship followed by a contract in 2011 and early 2012 as an independent artist.

He has done film posters for famous Blockbusters e.g. “Kill Bill”, “The Day the Earth Stood still” and “American Psycho”.  Vasseur’s work is very dark and bleak with a range of sullen colours. I like his style of work as I think it will work with the rebellious Dr Martens and will give the feeling of when you see people who look differently like the Skin head sub culture, to make want to look at the Zine however think it’s a bad thing.

Style of Barbara Kruger
The piece sums up the skinheads that they are Dr Martens, they have lived to the name.  Thats its more than just a pair of boots, that its part of them and shows who they are.
That they even get it tattooed on them and in research Kruger uses hands a number of times in her work so it fits well to her.

In style of Barbara Kruger, quite shocking and catchy slogans used of the skinhead subculture is a way of life for them, a life of fighting and being a rebel and to make it better wearing Dr Martens.  Skinhead subcultures would give Dr Martens a bad reputation, used for a fashion statement for what they are but they also used them as a weapon and they can cause damage!
